Information about COVID-19

20.04.2020

Dear fellow students,

we hope you were able to relax during the term break and stayed healthy during these tough times. As you probably already know, the upcoming semester will require online resources such as video calls. To keep you up to date, we have gathered some important information:

1. Zoom

Many classes will be held using the video conferencing app Zoom. It is suitable for mobile phones and tablets, and it can also be used on any computer via opening it in the browser. After opening it, you will have the possibility to log in using your LMU mail address. Further information on how to log in you can find here: https://www.it-servicedesk.uni-muenchen.de/it-angebote/zoom/index.html
Of course, there is no guarantee that Zoom will always work flawlessly. Should an error occur, feel free to contact the IT-Servicedesk per mail only. You can ask a question here: https://www.it-servicedesk.uni-muenchen.de/anfrage/index.html

2. Ordering books from the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek

One of the biggest challenges during the crisis will certainly be accessing material for studying. Hence, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek has introduced a temporarily solution, that being a delivery service for books within Germany. Up to three titles can be included in a single order, and a fee of € 4.00 will be charged for each order. In order to avoid an infection through books, they will be put in temporary storage for 24 hours before dispatching. Costs for returning the books have to be paid by the customer.

3. Springer Quellendatenbank

Another possibility to access material is using the Srpinger Quellendatenbank. Some publishers like Cambridge University Press, Bloomsbury and University of California Press allow students to access many of their e-books and e-media for free. The conditions for using this service vary from publisher to publisher – it may require a login via digital media or personal registration; some books are accessible without having to log in. Further information on which publishers participate and their conditions: https://www.ub.uni-muenchen.de/e-medien-der-ub/tempraere-angebote/index.html

4. Emergency fund of the University Women’s Representative

The emergency fund is meant for female students who are in need of financial help due to the current crisis. They can get support if e.g.
- they need to organise childcare on their own;
- their scholarship is about to expire or already has expired, in this case an extension of about one to two months can be arranged – depending on the amount of the scholarship;
- they need help in order to be able to study online, e.g. if they need additional gadgets like headsets or other;
- there is another emergency which was caused during the crisis.
To apply for the fund, you need to send an e-mail to the university women’s representative Dr. Margit Weber using the following address: frauenbeauftragte@lmu.de. It is best that you say why it is an emergency, why you need financial help and why you cannot get it from anybody else. Please also mention a person for reference for optional further questions (if you are a student, it can be a contact person from the student union or a teacher; if you are a junior scientist, it can be a supervisor at work.) The application is formless.

5. BambEx

BambEx is a series of exercise books especially designed for the preparation for the first state examination in English. It is also suitable for students who desire more training in linguistics. Each exercise book deals with one out of three types of tasks often given in part A of the test, transcription, morphology, and syntax. Solutions for the tasks given in prior tests are also included which makes the BambEx series an ideal companion. More information on the download: https://osf.io/pkzmf/
